Kiss my car goodbye! Thanks to it Catching Fire on my way to Ohio!

We were on our way to Columbus, Ohio's, to go to Ohio State Veterinary Hospital to pick up Roxie's leg brace  (I have yet to blog anything about Roxies leg injury) when 19 miles outside of Columbus we stopped to use the rest room at a DQ my car started smoking. I just thought it was the stirring fluid leaking... But it turned out to be my car was on fire... My passenger side door handle didn't work and John was in the DQ using the restroom...So I went across the seat and jumped out the drivers side door..grabbed Roxie and got away... Not once did I think CALL 911...! I know right... luckily the workers at the DQ did.... It took them a good 20 or 30 minutes for the fire department to get there.... and by then the entire motor was burning.... It was a mess..  Originally the DQ works and my husband tried to get the hood open so they could spray it with the fire extinguisher.... but the hood was stuck closed.. So when the fire department got there they had to pry my hood open with what looked like a mini jaws of life... and then they sprayed with the extinguisher and then the water hose... They totally flooded the car... They ripped the dash open and sprayed through it.... It was a mess...
Did I mention I only had liability??? Stupid me!!!!

This is the parking lot after the fire. I hope I don't get charged for damage. all I seen was some stains... No real damage.
But the guy took my insurance just in case.. Sad thing is I only had liability... and when I called I found up that it
Won't cover the parking lot if they decide that there is damage...

I was upset... But not as much as I expected really... It sucks that I lost my car... but atleast we have a truck to get around in... and I hope John gets his car fixed soon so we can have 2 vehicles again... I can't wait till some of our bills get paid off though... so I can get a newer fuel efficient car... We originally planned on trading his talon and my stratus in on a newer car.. But I guess that won't happen now... :(   After they put out the fire.. we looked decided it was totaled... and decided to leave it with a place called Just Junk It...They offered use $300 for it and I couldn't afford to tow it home and fix it since the motor was gone! So I took the offer... I couldn't get the money without the title though... So right now my car us still there and I have no money and they are waiting on me to send them my title so that I can get my money...

After that the Fire Chief was nice enough to give us a ride to the airport to pick up a very expensive $313 one way rental car to get us home! It was a 2010 Hyundai Elantra with XM radio which was nice... But it sucks how much it cost... I really didn't have the money to put forth.... but what are you going to do.?? Totaling a car has always been my worst travel nightmare...So I guess travel only looks up from here...

Waiting at baggage claim for John and the rental car.

Roxie was such a good girl at the airport for over an hour. She was nice to every one who came up to us!

The nice rental car

Had a nifty gear shift

We did end up going to the vet and picking up her little hot pink leg brace... Which she wears everytime she goes outside to make sure she doesn't over use her tendon while it continues to heal... She is happier now that she can go outside again.. And I am too because the puppy pads are messy and expensive...Plus after the costs of Roxie Exams, traveling three times to ohio, and the $400 brace... I am broke! and can't afford the puppy pads anymore....
Roxies New leg Brace

She is doing pretty good with it. although she will run around the yard kicking her leg up and to the side...lol

We also stopped by Wholefoods on the way home and picked up a case of Earth Balance stick.. They are 5.99 a four pack here... and it cost 2.89 a four pack at wholefoods... Plus I bought a case that was a little over $5 off plus... I had a $1 coupon for ever pack I bought... So I really got it at a good price! I also got a case of WholeSoy yogurt and 8 packs of lightlife sausage... Wish I would have got a case of the sausage... I didn't know the case would actually give you a better price... But I also had a dollar off ever Lightlife item... It was 2.69 each so I paid 1.69 each... So I was a money saving queen... :) O yeah lightlife sausage here is 3.99 a pack...  and I can't get plain containers of Soy yogurt here... So I stalked up for baking... I also got 6 packs of Tofurky since its cheaper there....

I was going to stop at a couple other places life Trader Joes and a Vegan Bakery but I didn't have the money or the time... So we came the Five hours home...

But at that it looks like, even if John gets his over time back, that we are not going on any kind of vacation this year.. That really sucks... John is from Charleston, SC and we were really looking forward to going there this fall... we havn't been there since his dad past over 3 years ago and I know he wanted to visit his sister....

Other pictures from our trip....

Stopped to let Roxie have a brake and for me to make a phone call and John showed me these... They were so awesome I had to get some pictures...

These high tension power lines make the weirdest sound....

Going through an old town. Thought these buildings looked pretty cool..

a new school they are building in Camron, WV. It looks like it will be very nice.

The old Prison in Moudsville,WV. They do tours but we didn;'t have time to take one. But it looks awesome from outside..

All Pets Expo day Two

Went back to the expo today. We did take Roxie but unlike yesterday there were tons and tons of people and dogs. So she was a little over whelmed, excited, and pulled us everywhere!

I made her a Stop BSL shirt this morning before we left out of one of John's old wife beaters, food coloring, & acrylic paint but she was so hyper I decided not to make her wear it. I had even made little pamphlets in case someone asked what it was.... It took me so long to figure out how to get the pamphlets made then I didn't even get to use them... errrrr.... But everyone did keep telling us what a gorgeous pit she is :)

But It was a good day. We got another Rescue Ink shirt, a signed picture, and we got two pictures of John, Me, and Roxie with Rescue Ink which was awesome.

I also took a few other pictures of them from a distance. They probably thought I was stocking them..lol.. and no I wasn't.. I just love to learn. And I wish I could have someone like them teach me so much about rescue and rehabilitation. Eric's rescue is something that few people take on and love to do. I really hope one day I can learn as much as he knows about rehabilitating pits and all dogs. I really look up to these guys. So I just wanted to be around them. But I did keep a distance from them just so they wouldn't think I was stalking them :)

O yeah. I remembered another tip Eric gave me yesterday. Watch the dogs pupils around other dogs, when meeting, when food aggression could be an issue, etc, If they dilate then its time to take action. If they are normal than your good for the moment.

O yeah and Rescue Ink is taking this dog back with them from our Marion Co. Shelter :) Her name was listed as Coconut on Marion Co. Website. Here is a link for another dog. A 5 week old puppy named Hayden. He is deaf and was left in a box in WV. Pet helpers picked him up. Rescue Ink took him back with them.

We wasn't out long, just a few hours but poor Roxie was so tired. She slept all the way home and then some more when we got here.

John and I, went outside and laid in the hammock for almost 2 hours. Talked and read our books. Nice and relaxing. I love our new hammock! I think we might be just as tired as Roxie. We went to bed really late last night and got up at 8am... Then got pulled around by her all day.

After the hammock time we went to my parents house and cooked out. Came back and cleaned up outside a little bit. laid in the hammock till it got dark. Now going to get ready for bed early. John goes back to work tomorrow.

kiiiiiiiiiiiij
This is Storms note to everyone... lol...she decided to help me by walking across the key board :)

All Pet Expo Day one: Rescue Ink Johnny & Eric

May 14 - 16, 2010
All Pets Expo - 2010

We had a wonderful day today at the All Pet Expo. in Morgantown WV. I specifically went to see Rescue Ink. Johnny O. & Eric B. was there. These guys are everything you expect and much, much more. It wasn't very busy at the expo today so we really got the chance to stop and talk with them. John talked with Johnny O. while I talked to Eric about his dog rescue and training. I love talking to people who have passion and love for what they are doing and both of these guys have that. Eric was so energized and willing to answer all my questions with throe answers. He gave me awesome advise that I have started using tonight.

I asked about Raw Diets for Dogs. Alot of Vegan And Vegetarians I know don't feed their animals meat based foods. I feel that if I am going to have animals that I am going to do the best I can to take care of them. I dont feel even meat based dog foods do this and I have been looking into a raw diet for a while. I follow Eric on facebook and he had mentioned that he feeds raw every other day. I think this is wonderful. He said he has had dogs that have had allergies, skin conditions, and digestive problems who are helped dramatically by raw diets. I have read before that you need to put grape seed oil on the raw food and he said he has never done that. He said if you want to start out small start with things like marrow bones. Even that will help. From what he said I am assuming he gets all his meat straight from a butcher. I have a hard time doing this. I still go back and forth with the vegan issue but I tell myself it is what they would eat in the wild. So I think I am going to start with marrow bones and work from there. He also gives his dogs big chunks of raw meat.

I also asked about food aggression. I told him how Sophie will go over to a bag of food put her nose straight down on it and if another dog comes near she will grow and snap. I also told him when we got her she was 30 pds under weight.

He said to start by hand feeding her. If I ever have to take my hands away or food, treats, toys, etc to go straight up from her, not out so that she can't lunge and get into that state of mind. If you have a problem with treat aggression as well has food aggression feed the aggressive one last.

To get them to look into your eyes when you feed them, give them treats, etc. So they wait on you to tell them what to do next. He said the first thing he always does, when he brings a new dog home, is hold the bowl up in front of his face so that they can see his eyes and make contact. Hold that contact and place the bowl. So they will be looking for that command and not looking around at everything else to get overly excited and make all the other dogs overly excited. If you have ever watched any of his videos you will see that all of his dogs are looking at him waiting calmly to see what to do next.

I am trying to remember everything.... I know this probably isn't even half of it. I am sure I will remember more later. But that was definitely the highlight of my day.. maybe even my week or month :)

Other interesting facts:
Rescue Ink is on in 161 countries
They go to events like this expo alot. They have been traveling to many states spreading awareness.
Still trying to remember. I would have more to put here too... But still processing everything..lol ..

I was so excited to meet them and learn so much. I wish I could find someone who could teach me as much as they know. I was over whelmed with info and I love info. The more info I can get the happier I am so I was elated when I left the expo.

We are heading back tomorrow to meet the who crew. I am still so excited. These guys are awesome!

We did look around the rest of the show. There was some younger guys there selling reptiles, turtles $50 or $60, scorpions $5 , tarantula, geckos $90, etc in small little plastic takeout containers. . I was disgusted! The turtles look like turtles you would find out in the wild here. I didn't really take a close look at the table so I am not sure what else they had but... How awful is that. I didn't see anyone purchase one and we was there for almost 3 hours. Hope everyone has more since then that.

There was a bird guy,John Lege, there with trained parrots (didn't watch). Bwana Jim, a show with an alligator, and some rescued birds; an owl, a turkey vulture, and a hawk, a alligator snapping turtle in a blue storage container. They run some kind of rescue/show.. Not sure didn't watch him either.

Extreme Reptiles, a traveling giant snake booth to walk through.. Didn't do that.. lol

I don't do anything that is a little iffy about animal welfare.

They were having a dock dog competition and it was pretty cool to watch. My camera didn't do the poor dogs justice though. This dog was really good an loved Jumping. He would even jump when she wasn't paying attention.lol

There was several rescues there I will have to write down the names tomorrow..

There is a nice local Dog/cat treats bakery called 4 Paws up pet bakery. It is located in Fairmont, WV. They had all kinds of cute treats with small ingredients lists. No sugar... They make good treats. The cakes are so adorable. I will get one for the dogs one day. I did get Peanut butter cake treats, carob brownie bites, and kitty kisses. The animals have loved them all. Even our picky Miss Chlo Chlo.

We purchased some car magnets as well.

O yeah.. and of course at Rescue Inks stand even though they didn't have everything there today we did purchase a T-shirt, beanie, & wrist band. Hoping to get a dog bandanna, book, and picture taken with them tomorrow. They are bringing a big truck into night with all the merchandise and the rest of the guys.. So here is John in the new Rescue in Attire :)
Heading back sometime tomorrow. Taking Roxie with use tomorrow. Hope she decides to be well behaved. This is the first time we have had her in a public place since we brought her home 7 months ago. So wish us luck.. Hope to see everyone there!
